UFA Projections: How much money did Canucks’ Elias Lindholm cost himself this year?

One of the toughest aspects of the free agent market to project has always been: How much money are these players earning or costing themselves with their play over the course of a season? We can see increases in point production or decreases in play quality with our eyes, but it isn’t always easy to quantify that in dollars. Sometimes we’re only left to grapple with reported offers that leak out into the public sphere.

We have a better idea now on changes in the marketplace thanks to @AFPAnalytics. This week, AFP Analytics released their final contract projections for pending free agents. When compared with their January midseason projections, we can more accurately quantify changes in a player’s equity.

Maybe equity is the best term for it. Because like a property’s value, it can be assessed based on conditions, but often the sale (or signing) will come in higher or lower depending on a number of variables, including position (or location), scarcity, etc.

Here are three pending UFAs who drastically increased their value this season:

Positive Equity

PlayerTeamJan. ProjectionMay ProjectionNet Change
Jake GuentzelCAR6 years x $7.94 m7 years x $9.28 m$17.3 million
Sean MonahanWPG3 years x $2.87 m4 years x $5.3 m$12.5 million
Sam ReinhartFLA8 years x $10.25 m8 years x $11.28 m$8.25 million

Projection Source: @AFPAnalytics

Some of those names will not be a surprise, including Reinhart coming off a 57-goal season. Monahan went for a late first-round pick before the trade deadline to Winnipeg. Guentzel’s production increased in Carolina. Defensemen Nikita Zadorov, Matt Roy and Jalen Chatfield all significantly increased their value to the market, as indicated in our latest free agent ranking below.

But there are some players who took a real hit to the wallet over the last eight months. None bigger than Vancouver Canucks center Elias Lindholm, whose production dipped from a career-high of 42 goals and 82 points two seasons ago, down to 15 goals and 44 points this season.

Negative Equity

PlayerTeamJan. ProjectionMay ProjectionNet Change
Elias LindholmVAN7 years x $8.04 m5 years x $6.75 m($22.4 million)
Brandon MontourFLA7 years x $8.72 m6 years x $7.7 m($14.8 million)
Brett PesceCAR6 years x $6.73 m5 years x $6.2 m($9.4 million)

Projection Source: @AFPAnalytics

The wild part about Lindholm’s number is that AFP Analytics’ projection is actually probably a little low. The Calgary Flames were believed to be offering an eight-year deal north of $8 million, likely totaling around $68 million. His current projection, around $34 million, has cut that offer in half. Yes, Lindholm may have lost upwards of $30-plus million between September and now. He was solid for the Canucks in the playoffs and made a ton of subtle, important plays – but his production has not rebounded to the level he was originally asking, which was believed to be around $9 million per year.

If that’s the case, two things are true: One, the Flames dodged a major bullet. And two, the idea of equity is really just that, an idea. It only truly counts when it is realized, or when the market decides what someone is willing to pay. And there’s a lot to be sorted out between now and when free agency opens on July 1.

With that, here is our latest top free agents ranking, which has expanded to 75 names:
