That's because the Caps sent him back to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, just another trip back up I-83 for the 20-year-old center.

Eakin goes back to the AHL in order to clear room for Alex Ovechkin. He has four goals and eight points through 29 games.

Eakin will get a chance to play more regular minutes in Hershey, likely on one of the top two lines. He's expected to play Sunday against the Norfolk Admirals.

“No headaches or anything, definitely not a concussion,” said Eakin, who finished out the game skating five more shifts. “I was buzzing a little bit after, but I don’t think the impact was too, too solid.”

Doesn't sound like Eakin will miss any playing time after getting his bell rung on Wednesday night. The rookie scored two goals and five points through his first 10 NHL games.

Cody Eakin, a healthy scratch Saturday night at the Islanders, was slotted on the second line with Marcus Johansson and Alexander Semin.

Eakin has played a solid game with his two points through two games. He may have some big-time upside while playing on the second line. Certainly keep an eye on his status moving forward.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. | Cody Eakin appears to be the latest victim of the Capitals' “numbers game” with 14 healthy forwards and just 12 spots to put them.

Eakin will miss tonight's game but likely draws back in shortly. The rookie scored a goal and an assist over his first two games.

Eakin is expected to face Buffalo on Friday night, playing on the third line between Jason Chimera and Joel Ward while Sjogren likely will be scratched. Asked if each would appear in one of the two remaining preseason games, Boudreau said he wasn’t sure.

Bruce Boudreau wants to see more of the youngster Eakin as he tries to find the ideal third-line center. Last season, the pivot scored 18 goals and 44 points over 26 games with the Kootenay Ice and 18 goals and 39 points over 30 games with the Swift Current Broncos. He could be close to NHL ready but could also benefit from some time in the AHL.
