Staal will miss his second straight game with an undisclosed injury. Coach Alain Vigneault said that he is hopeful that Staal will be ready for the first practice before the playoffs.

Terms were not disclosed, but ESPN.com reported a six-year extension with average annual value of $5.7 million, a full no-trade clause in the first three years and a full-no movement clause. Staal will take part in warmups before deciding if he will play tonight. Staal’s grandfather passed away and he has not been on the ice for the last two games, so he could sit tonight’s game out.

Staal says that his back is feeling good, but head coach Alain Vigneault says he is still day-to-day and a decision on whether he plays tomorrow will be made tomorrow.

Staal has a goal and three assists with a plus-6 rating in his last three games. He has totalled 10 points (3G / 7A) in 46 games this season.

Staal has missed the last 10 games after suffering a concussion on December 7 in New Jersey. Staal is one of the Rangers best defineseman so his return is a huge boost.

If you are counting on Staal, it appears he may be nearing a return to the Rangers' blueline soon.

It is a good sign that Staal is able to take part in workouts less than a week after suffering a concussion, but he will need to be cleared medically and start skating with the team before he can return to the lineup. Expect him to miss at least one more week.

Staal suffered the concussion in Saturday's loss to the Devils and could be sidelined for a lengthy period of time. Despite the concussion not being as serious as the last, it is a concussion nonetheless. Staal will likely land on IR as Michael Del Zotto and Justin Falk now appear to have permanent spots on the Rangers' blueline for the next couple of weeks.

There is still no word on whether or not Staal suffered a concussion but he will be monitored closely by doctors over the next few days. Michael Del Zotto will enter the lineup with Staal out. Consider him questionable for Tuesday vs. Nashville.

Staal was able to skate off under his own power but did not return to the game. It has the sounds of a possible concussion and he seems doubtful to play tonight vs. Washington. Monitor his status as puck-drop draws near.
