

Kempny will play for the first time since January 26th, replacing Justin Schultz, who is out with an upper-body injury. Kempny has one assist in seven games with the Capitals.

Kempny will play for the first time since January 2nd, replacing Dmitry Orlov, who was suspended for two games. Kempny has one assist in three games this season.

Kempny had surgery for a torn hamstring in 2019 and struggled through most of 2020 and will now most, if not all of 2021 after suffering a torn Achilles’ tendon while training in the Czech Republic. After finding out about Kempny's injury, the Capitals re-signed Brendan Dillon to a four-year extension. Dillon filled in for Kempny next to John Carlson on the top-pair last year.


This will be the first time that Kempny is a healthy scratch in 2020 and he will be replaced by Radko Gudas, who was a healthy scratch on Sunday. Kempny has just one assist while playing 18:50 ATOI in his last 20 games.

Kempny missed the last two games with an illness but was back on the third-pair with Radko Gudas on Monday. With Christian Djoos battling an upper-body injury, Kempny is expected to return to the lineup tomorrow vs. the Islanders. Kempny has three goals and 10 assists (13 points) in 30 games this season.

Kempny missed last night's game with an illness and will miss his second straight game on Saturday. With Kempny staying back in Washington, Christian Djoos will remain on the Capitals blueline vs. the Hurricanes.


Both Kempny and Radko Gudas are battling illness, so Christian Djoos was called up from the AHL in case one or both of them miss tonight's game vs. the Blue Jackets.

Kempny missed the first eight games of the season but will play Friday vs. the Rangers. With Jonas Siegenthaler playing well on the top-pair, Kempny will get eased back in on the third-pair with Radko Gudas but could return to his minute-eating ways in a quick hurry. Kempny had 25 points (6G / 19A), 111 shots and 84 hits while playing 19:11 ATOI in 71 games a season ago.


Kempny was on the ice for Monday’s practice but is not ready to play vs. Dallas. Jonas Siegenthaler is expected to be recalled from Hershey (AHL) and will skate on the top-pair with John Carlson. Kempny remains day-to-day and Thursday is a possible return date for him.

Kempny will not be available for the Capitals season-opener but head coach Todd Reirden did not rule out a possible return against the Islanders on Friday. Kempny will likely replace Martin Fehervary when he’s set to return.

Kempny was in a non-contact jersey during Tuesday’s practice, which suggests that he’s not ready to play in St. Louis. With Kempny likely out, Jonas Siegenthaler is expected to skate on the top-pair and 19-year-old Martin Fehervary is expected to make his NHL debut.

The Capitals will be without one of their top-pairing defensemen for the rest of the regular season and playoffs after Kempny underwent surgery to repair a hamstring injury that he suffered on March 20th. The Capitals acquired Nick Jensen from Detroit at the trade deadline and he will help replace Kempny on the Capitals blueline.


Kempny skated with John Carlson during Tuesday’s practice and will play Wednesday vs. the Golden Knights. Kempny had 10 points (3G / 7A) in 53 games a season ago.

Kempny was acquired from the Blackhawks mid-season in 2018. Kempny had seven points (1G / 6A) in 31 games with Chicago and three points (2G / 1A) in 22 games with Washington—10 points (3G / 7A) in 53 games overall. Kempny is a solid second/third-paring defenseman, who will be with the Capitals through the 2022 season.
