This is positive news for the Lightning and Callahan owners. The day-to-day tag should lead to more frequent and detailed updates on Callahan's status and could see him return this week. He will not play tonight vs. Arizona and even Thursday vs. Philly seems unreasonable, but potentially Saturday vs. the Capitals. Monitor his progress as the week goes along.

This is the first time that Callahan has skated since suffering a lower-body injury last Monday. Callahan is listed as week-to-week so there are no daily updates on his status, but this is a positive sign that he won't be out long.

Callahan had one goal on three shots in 20:59 of ice time in the Lightning season opener. Moving to the top-line should definitely help increase Callahan's production.

Callahan was acquired with a pair of draft picks for Martin St. Louis at the trade deadline. In 20 games with the Lightning he had six goals and five assists (11 points) to go along with a plus-4 rating. Callahan did not see a ton of playing time with Steven Stamkos next season, but that is something that may change heading into 2014-15. He is typically good for 20-plus goals and 20-plus assists, but regular ice-time with Stamkos and we could see those numbers inflate.

Callahan was traded to the Lightning on Wednesday in a captain for captain trade that saw Martin St. Louis go the other way. There was speculation that Callahan could play on Steven Stamkos' wing, but as of right now that is not the case. He will make his Lightning debut tonight vs. the Sabres.

It is a captain for captain trade, however St. Louis is signed through next season while Callahan is a pending free agent who wants a huge contract (expected to be around 6-years / $36M). He is a gritty, hard-working forward who will likely spend the rest of the season with the Lightning but not be re-signed in summer. He could also be a piece in another trade this afternoon, but should he stay with the Lightning, he could find himself replacing St. Louis on a line with Steven Stamos.

Callahan will enter the lineup for J.T Miller and skate with Benoit Pouliot and Derick Brassard. Callahan missed the previous nine contests with a knee injury.

The 28-year-old winger has dealt with at least seven different injuries since the 2009-10 season, and he’s missed a total of 44 games in that span. As someone who excels playing a physical, power forward type of hockey that includes a lot of shot blocking, Callahan’s style of play puts him at a greater risk for injury than skilled players.

Callahan returned to practice last week and will play tonight after missing the last seven games with a broken thumb. His original timetable was 3-4 weeks, but tonight will mark the 2 and a half weeks point. The early return is great news for a Rangers team who are struggling to find offence.

Callahan got rid of the no-contact jersey that he was wearing yesterday. Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault said yesterday that Callahan is probably still 7-10 days from returning.

The is the first time Callahan has skated with the Rangers since breaking his thumb in mid-October. His original recovery timetable was 3-4 weeks and today marks exactly two weeks. Callahan could potentially return next week, Wednesday vs. Pittsburgh or Thursday against the Blue Jackets.

Callahan scored three goals in five games after just returning from shoulder surgery. The Rangers have recalled Darroll Powe from Hartford.

Callahan had 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 games with the Rangers last season.
