Darling has not played well since signing a big deal in Carolina and is now headed to unrestricted free agency after being bought out. Darling appeared in just eight NHL games last year, spending most of the year in the AHL, where he was 5-8-0 with a 3.40 GAA and .882 SV%.
Darling will make his first NHL start since November 24th. After going to the AHL, Darling was quickly recalled because of an injury to Curtis McElhinney. Darling has struggled to a 3.14 GAA and .892 SV% in seven games this season and should be left on the waiver wire until he can prove he is a capable NHL netminder again.
With Curtis McElhinney banged up, Darling quickly returns to the NHL after clearing waivers and being sent down on November 30th. Darling struggled with the Hurricanes this season but has gone 3-1-0 with a 2.35 GAA and .911 SV% in five games with Charlotte. He will likely split time with Petr Mrazek while McElhinney is out.
Some more early-season struggles and Curtis McElhinney playing lights out as of late led to Darling being waived on Thursday. Darling stopped 25 of 26 shots (.962 SV%) in his only AHL action this season. He will get a lot of playing time with the Checkers to try and get his game back on track and could return to the NHL if McElhinney and/or Petr Mrazek struggle.
