Knight will start in Washington on Friday.

The Rangers return to action on Saturday afternoon against the New Jersey Devils.

Thompson was pulled after allowing three goals on 12 shots in the first period of Wednesday's game in Carolina. Montreal has signed Jacob Fowler to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Fowler was a third-round pick, 69th overall, of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old goalie has spent the previous two seasons playing collegiate hockey with Boston College and posted a stellar 1.63 GAA and .940 SV% in 35 games (25-7-2) in 2024-25.

Shepard has been recalled from Hershey (AHL.)

Logan Thompson exited Thursday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes due to an upper-body injury and did not return. The Capitals have recalled Hunter Shepard from the Hershey Bears (AHL) in the interim to serve as the back up to Charlie Lindgren if Thompson's injury keeps him out of the lineup. The 29-year-odl Shepard has a 2.81 GAA and .891 SV% in 37 games (22-11-3) with Hershey this season.
