The Islanders came into 2016-17 with three goalies on the roster and after a superb performance at the World Cup of hockey, Halak struggled in the Isles’ crease. The 31-year-old made 20 starts and went 6-8-5 with a 3.23 GAA and .904 SV%. It was a big drop-off from his numbers over the last two seasons in Brooklyn and has landed him on waivers. A team in-need of help in net like Ottawa or Los Angeles may claim him, but his $4.5M cap-hit may scare some teams off. We could see Halak heading to Bridgeport (AHL) at this time tomorrow.
Boucher has appeared in just nine games with the Devils this season. Boucher has been an accomplished scorer at lower levels, including 32 points (19G / 13A) in 34 games with Albany (AHL) last year.
Puempel, 23, was a first round pick (24th overall) in 2011, but has yet to make a splash at the NHL level. He has failed to record a point in 13 games with the Senators this season. Puempel had 17 goals and 13 assists (30 points) in 34 games with Binghamton (AHL) last year and has been claimed by the Rangers because they’ll be without Mika Zibanejad for 6-8 weeks.
Griffith, 23, failed to record a point in three games with the Maple Leafs after being claimed from Boston, but now he heads to Florida where he’ll likely be given a bigger opportunity. Griffith had 77 points (24G / 53A) in 57 games with Providence (AHL) last season.
The Red Wings lost Frk on waivers before the season started, but he only appeared in two games with the Hurricanes before finding himself back on waivers on Monday. Frk returns to Grand Rapids, where he had 27 goals and 17 assists (44 points) in 67 games last year.
Smith appeared in four games with the Avalanche this season, but returns to the Maple Leafs via waivers—he had six points (2G / 4A) in 16 games with Toronto last year.
Raymond is a minus-2 with just three shots on goal while averaging just 9:34 TOI/GM through the first three games of the season. His placement on waivers will likely open up a roster spot for Emerson Etem to get into the lineup.
Andrighetto, 23, split his 2015-16 season between the AHL and NHL. With St. John’s (AHL) he collected 23 points (10G / 13A) in 26 games and had 17 points (7G / 10A) in 44 games with the Canadiens. It wouldn't be shocking if another team claims Swiss winger.
Etem was originally drafted by the Ducks back in 2010 (29th overall) and played with their organization until the 2014-15 season before ending up with the Rangers and then the Canucks last year. He hasn’t lived up to the billing of a first round pick, having collected just 46 points (22G / 24A) in 170 NHL games.
Etem did not make the Canucks opening night roster and has been placed on waivers with the hope that they can send him to Utica (AHL). Etem had 15 points (7G / 8A) in 58 games with the Canucks and Rangers last year.
Dahlbeck, 25, had eight points (2G / 6A) in 71 games with the Coyotes last year. Dahlbeck has good size (6’3” / 207 lbs.), but doesn’t play an overly physical brand of hockey and is not very offensive either. Dahlbeck has 12 points (3G / 9A) in 94 career NHL games with Chicago and Arizona.
After signing a one-year deal with the Islanders this summer, a lot of people were expecting Parenteau to be a nice sleeper pick as a potential linemate of John Tavares’. Parenteau has been claimed by the Devils, where he could work his way into a top-6 role and potential play with Adam Henrique and Taylor Hall.
With Matt Murray injured for the first month of the season, the Penguins will bring in Condon to be a stop-gap behind Marc-Andre Fleury until Murray is healthy. Condon had a 2.71 GAA and .903 SV% in 55 games with the Canadiens last season and could see a couple of starts in October.
Griffith, 23, was a fifth round pick (131st overall) in 2012 and developed into a high-end AHLer scorer, but never found his way with Boston. Griffith is familiar with Maple Leafs’ assistant GM Mark Hunter from his time with the London Knights. Griffith had 77 points (24G / 53A) in 57 games with Providence (AHL) last season and has a chance to crack the Maple Leafs’ bottom-6 following this claim.
Pulkkinen had a tough time landing a permanent spot in the Red Wings lineup after a breakout AHL season in 2014-15. Pulkkinen had 61 points (34G / 27A) in 46 games with Grand Rapids but has only picked up 20 points (11G / 9A) in 67 NHL games since. Pulkkinen has a lethal shot and could crack the Wild’s top-9.
Scuderi is not known for his offence and basically lost his spot in the lineup when the Kings brought in Zach Trotman and Tom Gilbert this summer.
Michalek, 33, has picked up just 29 points (8G / 21A) over the last three seasons and his physical brand of defence can be made up by a younger blueliner in Arizona. The Coyotes have an abundance of young defensemen and Michalek appears to be on the outside looking in.
Parenteau being waived was one of the biggest surprises of training camp. The veteran winger signed a one year deal with the Islanders this summer in the hope that he would be able to rekindle his old chemistry with John Tavares. However, it looks as if the Islanders would rather get a little younger and have someone like Mathew Barzal or Josh Ho Sang instead of the 33-year-old Parenteau.
Pulkkinen, 24, is only one year removed from posting ridiculous numbers with Grand Rapids in the AHL. The Finnish winger had 34 goals and 27 assists (61 points) in 46 games that year, but has struggled to get regular playing time in Detroit ever since. Pulkkinen has a lethal shot, but scouts say he may lack the foot speed necessary to have a huge impact at the NHL level. So far, he has just 11 goals and nine assists (20 points) in 70 career NHL games, but still has a ton of upside, so don’t be surprised if a team doesn’t hesitate to add him to their roster for free.
