Morning from Columbus -- afternoon here -- where the Wild has claimed PIttsburgh's Nick Johnson off waivers. He's a 25-year-old minor-league skilled guy who has shown checking ability in the NHL, especially this preseason.

Johnson was NHL ready but failed to make the team out of camp. Last season, the forward scored 20 goals and 39 points through 48 games while in the AHL. He could be a contributing third liner capable of scoring a few goals; Pens assistant coach Tony Granato essentially explained just that earlier in the week.

On Thursday the Capitals got down to 27 players in camp by sending defensemen Sean Collins and Patrick McNeill and forward Chris Bourque to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

No immediate fantasy hockey value on waivers.

According to Newsday's Arthur Staple and the Post's Brett Cyrgalis [update: now confirmed by the team], five New York Islanders will be hitting to waivers today: Tomas Marcinko, Trevor Frischmon, Tim Wallace, Ty Wishart and Dylan Reese.
